Week 10: Divorce
This topic held specific interest to me since my parents divorced when I was young. I also found out that the time my parents divorced was one of the most common times that married people get divorced since it is one of the most difficult times in the marriage. Divorce did not separate me from one of my parents as I was able to see both regularly. However when I get married and have children one...

Week 8: Family Values
This week’s course materials were very insightful. One thing that was very interesting to me was that family values vary between cultures and households for that matter. Your family values greatly determine the upbringing you were brought up in. When you get married and have children, you and your wife will combine values and come up with your own way to raise the children. Teaching your...

Week 7: Parental Roles
This whole course has made me look at the bigger picture in life. I have been guilty for a long of living in the present. Sometimes I do things without any thought of the future ramifications. The entire course has taught me to be responsible for my actions. This week’s material made me think of my childhood and how my parents raised me. I began to think about how I would raise my children...

Week 2: Religious Views
I am adding this entry in late as I have realized that I forgot to add it during the week it was discussed. I found this material very interesting as it clarified to me many of the perspectives different religions had toward marriage. I was very fond of some of the elements that the different religions contained. The Buddhist view on marriage views the institution as a union between man and women...

Week 6: Abortion
As we all know abortion is a very controversial issue that surrounds our society. I found the materials from this week’s lesson persuasive. Many of the arguments made against abortion were solid points supported by evidence. I had previously held a stance that since I am not a woman I should have no say on whether or not abortion should be legal or illegal. Reflecting back on that now and I...

Week 5: Sacred Marriage
This week’s material forced me to think about the total scale of the instituion of marriage. When you begin to consider that marriage not only brings two people together, but it also brings God into your relationship. I think marriage should be respected since it is a covenant involving you, your sponse, and God in a Trinity. The lesson changed my previous views on the institution of...

Week 4: Sexuality
After reading through the class discussion I began to look around to see other views on sex in our society. Most of the people in discussion including myself felt that sex is promoted in our society. I am studying in abroad in Italy right now, and I am trying to figure out how the values and morals are different from the States. It’s difficult to identify since I don’t speak the...

Week 3 Blog Entry
After doing the readings this week I was able to apply some of the concepts into my daily routine. I tried to listen to people and give the positive reinforcements. The outcome resulted in positive communication and a better connection. The discussion was interesting because alot of people mentioned how they stereotyped with being poor empathic listeners. I know that some of guy friends are poor...

Intimacy and Love
As I have read through the chapter I am learning more and more about the true meaning of intimacy. Prior to this class, intimacy is a term I thought only pertained to sexual relationships. I was unaware that intimacy exists in all relationships that we have. While reading into the chapter I was also able to see the distinctions between the levels of love. Every relationship I have contains...

Final Part 2
1) Early in the course I learned how different media outlets hold certain biases. Fox News is conservative and MSNBC is more moderate. No matter what news station I watch they portray the news in a manner to influence me towards their beliefs. With my new media literacy, it is important for me to find balance when watching the news. It’s also important for me to not interpret one news story...

Final Thoughts
Throughout the semester I’ve been told to view media objectively. I try to take notice to some of the messages in media that come my way each day and filter what is being thrown at me. There is no doubt that I have taken a whole new perspective on the world. I’ve learned it’s very important to understand that everybody can percieve something differently. It’s become very...

Stem Cells and Society
Technology has allowed our society to begin stem cell research. Using stem cell research the possibilities to cure disease are endless. However, many people are split on the issue of whether to support stem cell research or to be opposed to it. As I view this issue, I see that yes we may be playing God but we will be improving the quality of life for countless people who ultimately suffer greatly...

How To Get Ahead in Advertising
What is Glamour? After reading the book and watching the film I learned that good advertisements are only made to create an idea in the consumers mind. In the film we saw the promise of an acne medication. The medicine worked to a degree but it did not cure acne. The advertiser was careful in making the distinction. Glamour ads show the consumer a life that they can have if they buy the product.

Triumph of the Will
I had previously never seen any of this until a few classes ago when it was shown. When I watched this film I tried to remove the negative concepts that I associate with Nazi Germany. I try and visualize the state of Germany after World War I and the progression it made as shown in the film. If I had lived in America during The Great Depression and seen this film I would have been inspired by the...

"Tough times don't last, tough people do."
I don’t know who came up this one but it’s one of my favorites. Every time I have a rough day  or something bad happens I just say this quote in my head a few times. I find little things like these can be extremely helpful in day-to-day life dealing with life’s obstacles. If this one doesn’t work for you run a google search. There’s plenty of websites out there with...

The Century of The Self
Sigmund Freud was a crazy bastard. Obviously this guy was brilliant and his work on psychoanalysis was groundbreaking. There’s plenty we don’t know about how the human mind works and Freud’s work provided some new insight. I believe Freud’s findings on pyschoanalysis and deep human instinctual desires are valid. Whether or not a cigarette was originally representative as a...
