The Century of The Self
Sigmund Freud was a crazy bastard. Obviously this guy was brilliant and his work on psychoanalysis was groundbreaking. There’s plenty we don’t know about how the human mind works and Freud’s work provided some new insight. I believe Freud’s findings on pyschoanalysis and deep human instinctual desires are valid. Whether or not a cigarette was originally representative as a penis is debatable, but I think in general there are plenty of instinctual impulses that can be persuaded and manipulated.
I liked this video a lot, I find documentaries with British commentary especially easy to listen to. The experiment on having women smoke successfully broke the taboo against women smoking. This alone gives evidence that Freud’s philosophies were successful and true.
