Yankees-Red Sox 2008: This is a rivalry that has been consistently competitive for the past five or six years. These two teams have always been rivals but it’s incredible how good both teams have been the past few years in particular. The rivalry extends through the management aspect of the game as well. Both team owners are extremely competitive and with no salary cap in baseball, John Henry and George/Hank Steinbrenner engage in heated contract negotiations every winter fighting over the cream of the free agency crop.
The point I’m trying to make in this post is that this rivalry goes beyond playing a game. It’s more than a game when these two team plays. When I watch the Red Sox play other teams, I become a fan of the other team for that game. This rivalry has influenced me and so many others to hate Red Sox Nation. That’s why I love this rivalry. It shows the dynamic impact sports has on American culture.
